Evidentiality of Discourse Items and Because-Clauses
ASYMMETRY There exists a cross-linguistic asymmetry in availability of discourse items among adjunct clauses between because-clauses on one hand, and temporal clauses and if -clauses on the other (see examples (1) for English obviously , (2) for German ja and (3) for Japanese wa; see Hooper and Thompson 1973, Tenny 2002, Sawada and Larson 2004 among others for the same type of asymmetry with ot...
متن کاملBecause of Being At Home With Children
Family Matters No.43 Autumn 1996 sense that they can manage and cope positively in the world around them. Of course, at the same time as we might wish to encourage a sense of independence and control in children we must not unduly endanger them. متن کاملImplicatures and Evidentiality of Because Complements at Syntax-Semantics-Pragmatics Interfaces
This paper will explain the asymmetry parallelism between node ‘because’ and toki ‘when’ in terms of the availability of Evidential Phrase in syntax, following the analysis by Chinque [1], Speas [2] and Tenny [3]. This (in)compatibility of Evidential Phrases with Adjunct Clauses is further motivated by the syntax-semantics difference of Adjunct Clauses discussed by Johnston [4].
متن کاملInferential Conditionals and Evidentiality
Many conditionals seem to convey the existence of a link between their antecedent and consequent. We draw on a recently proposed typology of conditionals to argue for an old philosophical idea according towhich the link is inferential in nature. We show that the proposal has explanatory force by presenting empirical results on the evidential meaning of certain English and Dutch modal expressions.
متن کاملEvidentiality and Determination
This paper investigates the semantic properties of the French determiner quelque. It is shown that quelque conveys inferential evidentiality, that is, it selects interpretations in which the speaker infers the proposition conveyed by the sentence that hosts the determiner. This accounts for several other properties, for instance the fact that quelque is anti-specific and does not combine freely...
